The World Of Tattoo Designing | Arts and Entertainment

Each person has his own way on revealing himself and one of the most preferred means to do this is through skin art also known as tattoo. Some individuals like henna tattoo however a majority of skin art lovers choose the permanent kind which lasts for their whole life.

There are a lot of kinds of tattoo designs that can be applied on your skin and they can be found in different sizes and colors.

Skin art lovers and experts state that all tattoo designs in the human body represent the individual?s character and those designs are nothing but a mess if you do not have an expert skin art artist. Some artists have their own list of tattoo designs and some are accepting customized designs.
The rate of a tattoo relies on the size of the tattoo designs and occasionally based upon the ability of the artist.

What is a Tattoo?

A Tattoo or Skin art is a kind of customizing the look of the skin of the human body. This is executed by inserting an indelible ink into the layer of the skin called dermis to change its pigment.

Skin art had been exercised by different people and cultures centuries ago, most especially in South-east Asia which spread virally around the world.

Due to the fact that skin art calls for breaking the barrier of the skin, tattooing holds wellness risks like allergies and infections. Specialist tattooists avoid those risks by following universal safety measures, using disposable needles and items, and sanitizing all their skin art equipment after every use.

Tattooing by an amateur that generally takes place inside jails has a raised risk of getting you an infection. 5 Kinds of Tattoo

Natural? triggered by injuries

Amateur/Professional? makes use of traditional tattooing approaches and devices

Cosmetic? thought about as permanent comprise

Medical? made use of to show exactly what allergic reactions or disease an individual has

Long-term Tattoo Removal

Common Skin Art Tattoo is typically considered long-term because it is impossible to be removed naturally; it could not be removed by water or alcohol. On the other hand, these long-term tattoo designs can still be eliminated by means of laser treatment.

Getting rid of these permanent tattoo designs can trigger severe pain which is more compared to the pain of applying them on your skin. The approaches utilized in this laser skin art removal include excision, cryosurgery, salabrasion and dermabrasion.

PJ Carlesimo discusses his "leverage and credibility" compared to a more established coach

Part of the reason Avery Johnson felt things went sour with the Nets is because Mikhail Prokhorov refused to give him a contract extension, leaving him as a lameduck coach who had no leverage or respect from the players.

P.J. Carlesimo, of course, is in a more tenuous situation as with an interim tag. He admitted before Saturday's victory over the Cavaliers that the lack of stability is an issue, and that a coach such as Phil Jackson would have more "credibility." His comments are worth a read:

"I think very few coaches in this league have the ? I don?t know what word I?m thinking of ? it?s kind of power. I?ll think of it. We got to the point at Seton Hall that I had it; the players knew that I was going to be there no matter what. Pop has that. Phil had it. There are very few guys in the league that have it. If you don?t have that, which very, very few do, it?s infinitely better to have many years on your contract, and hopefully at a good number, because that doesmake you a more efficient coach, no question. At this point, if Phil (Jackson) were coaching, or (Jerry) Sloan when he was in Utah or (Gregg Popovich), they have more credibility and leverage with the players? than I do.

"And honestly, it?s not a concern now. This is just the situation and you?ve got to deal with. I just think for any coach ? I?ve been in that situation in other places ? you just really do not want to go into the last year of your contract ever. There is no coach that can say he wants to do that. Maybe Scottie (Brooks), after you win Coach of the Year and you?ve got one year left and they?re not writing a big enough check. But for the most part, no, you don?t want to go into the last year of your contract ever in this league. But coaches don?t have with very very very very few exceptions the leverage that a player has, because there?s more zeros on their contract than there are on their contract."

Bolivia expropriates Spanish energy subsidiaries

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) ? President Evo Morales nationalized electricity distribution subsidiaries of the Spanish energy company Iberdrola in a public ceremony on Saturday.

Morales issued a decree allowing the takeover of shares in Empresa de Electricidad de La Paz (Electropaz) and Empresa de Luz y Fuerza de Oruro (Elfeo), which supply energy in the Andean nation.

In the ceremony at Bolivia's government palace, Morales also announced the expropriation of an investment management company and a service provider belonging to the Spanish energy giant.

Morales said he had "been forced to take this step" to ensure that electric service rates remained "equitable" in the regions of La Paz and Oruro. Soldiers guarded the installations of the electricity distribution companies, marked with signs reading: "Nationalized."

The decree read by Morales also calls for Iberdrola to receive indemnification after an independent firm is hired within 180 days to determine the value of the nationalized shares.

Telephone calls and emails seeking comment from Iberdrola in Spain were not immediately answered.

Morales in May also nationalized Transportadora de Electricidad belonging to?Spanish company Red Electrica, which controlled 74 percent of energy transmission in Bolivia.

In his first year in office in 2006, the Bolivian president nationalized the oil industry through a renegotiation of contracts with a dozen oil companies, including Repsol, Petrobras, BG and Total.

In 2009 Morales transferred to state control the country's largest telephone operator, which had been controlled by Italy's ETI, and in 2010 he did the same with the four largest power generators, which had belonged to French-owned Suez,?Rurelec of Britain?and also to Bolivian shareholders.

AP Source: McCoy, Hicks suspended by Texas

Texas has sent home backup quarterback Case McCoy and injured linebacker Jordan Hicks on the eve of the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio for violating team rules, a person with knowledge of the suspensions told The Associated Press.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Friday because the school wasn't releasing the names of the suspended players. The person said the players violated curfew.

Coach Mack Brown addressed the situation during a previously schedule news conference Friday and referred to a KENS-TV report (http://tinyurl.com/cw8dcj3) that police were investigating two unidentified Texas players in an alleged sexual assault at a San Antonio hotel.

"This has been reported: We had a couple young men that broke team rules last night. They have been suspended from the team and they will be sent home," Brown said at a previously scheduled news conference in San Antonio. "They will not be available for the game and I will not address any more questions in that matter."

Sgt. Javier Salazar, a San Antonio police spokesman, said only that detectives are in the early stages of investigating a case of alleged sexual assault in the downtown area. Investigators are interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence, he said.

"It's a very meticulous process," Salazar said. "As far as these investigations go, it's very early."

A heavily-redacted police report says a 21-year-old woman told police she believed she was assaulted around 2 a.m. Friday after inviting two men to her hotel room. The report shows only that the men are students and that one is 21 and the other is 20. The woman told police that she had had several drinks when she invited the men to her hotel.

The woman said one of the men assaulted her while the other "just stood there and watched," the report said. Police said they observed bruises on the woman's right knee and left bicep.

After talking to police, the woman was taken to a San Antonio hospital, where she was seen by a sexual assault nurse examiner, according to the report. The two suspects also were taken to the hospital and examined by the nurse, the report says.

Ben Turner, acting general manager at the Holiday Inn on San Antonio's Riverwalk, said police were summoned to the hotel between 2 and 3 a.m. Friday to investigate an alleged sexual assault. He said hotel staff was cooperating with police.

McCoy, the brother of former Texas star and current Browns quarterback Colt McCoy, has played eight games this season, including one start. He has thrown for 722 yards and six touchdowns.

Hicks was a starter but hasn't played since the third game of the season because of a hip injury.

Texas (8-4) plays Oregon State (9-3) in Saturday's game at the Alamodome. The Longhorns' walk-through at the stadium Friday afternoon was closed to the media.

(AP) ? Truth is, retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf didn't care much for his popular "Stormin' Norman" nickname.

The seemingly no-nonsense Desert Storm commander's reputed temper with aides and subordinates supposedly earned him that rough-and-ready moniker. But others around the general, who died Thursday in Tampa, Fla., at age 78 of complications from pneumonia, knew him as a friendly, talkative and even jovial figure who preferred the somewhat milder sobriquet given by his troops: "The Bear."

That one perhaps suited him better later in his life, when he supported various national causes and children's charities while eschewing the spotlight and resisting efforts to draft him to run for political office.

He lived out a quiet retirement in Tampa, where he'd served his last military assignment and where an elementary school bearing his name is testament to his standing in the community.

Schwarzkopf capped an illustrious military career by commanding the U.S.-led international coalition that drove Saddam Hussein's forces out of Kuwait in 1991 ? but he'd managed to keep a low profile in the public debate over the second Gulf War against Iraq, saying at one point that he doubted victory would be as easy as the White House and the Pentagon predicted.

Schwarzkopf was named commander in chief of U.S. Central Command at Tampa's MacDill Air Force Base in 1988, overseeing the headquarters for U.S. military and security concerns in nearly two dozen countries stretching across the Middle East to Afghanistan and the rest of central Asia, plus Pakistan.

When Saddam invaded Kuwait two years later to punish it for allegedly stealing Iraqi oil reserves, Schwarzkopf commanded Operation Desert Storm, the coalition of some 30 countries organized by President George H.W. Bush that succeeded in driving the Iraqis out.

At the peak of his postwar national celebrity, Schwarzkopf ? a self-proclaimed political independent ? rejected suggestions that he run for office, and remained far more private than other generals, although he did serve briefly as a military commentator for NBC.

While focused primarily on charitable enterprises in his later years, he campaigned for President George W. Bush in 2000, but was ambivalent about the 2003 invasion of Iraq. In early 2003 he told The Washington Post that the outcome was an unknown: "What is postwar Iraq going to look like, with the Kurds and the Sunnis and the Shiites? That's a huge question, to my mind. It really should be part of the overall campaign plan."

Initially Schwarzkopf had endorsed the invasion, saying he was convinced that Secretary of State Colin Powell had given the United Nations powerful evidence of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. After that proved false, he said decisions to go to war should depend on what U.N. weapons inspectors found.

He seldom spoke up during the conflict, but in late 2004 he sharply criticized Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and the Pentagon for mistakes that included erroneous judgments about Iraq and inadequate training for Army reservists sent there.

"In the final analysis I think we are behind schedule. ... I don't think we counted on it turning into jihad (holy war)," he said in an NBC interview.

Schwarzkopf was born Aug. 24, 1934, in Trenton, N.J., where his father, Col. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, founder and commander of the New Jersey State Police, was then leading the investigation of the Lindbergh kidnap case. That investigation ended with the arrest and 1936 execution of German-born carpenter Richard Hauptmann for murdering famed aviator Charles Lindbergh's infant son.

The elder Schwarzkopf was named Herbert, but when the son was asked what his "H'' stood for, he would reply, "H."

As a teenager Norman accompanied his father to Iran, where the elder Schwarzkopf trained the Iran's national police force and was an adviser to Reza Pahlavi, the young Shah of Iran.

Young Norman studied there and in Switzerland, Germany and Italy, then followed in his father's footsteps to West Point, graduating in 1956 with an engineering degree. After stints in the U.S. and abroad, he earned a master's degree in engineering at the University of Southern California and later taught missile engineering at West Point.

In 1966 he volunteered for Vietnam and served two tours, first as a U.S. adviser to South Vietnamese paratroops and later as a battalion commander in the U.S. Army's Americal Division. He earned three Silver Stars for valor ? including one for saving troops from a minefield ? plus a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and three Distinguished Service Medals.

While many career officers left military service embittered by Vietnam, Schwarzkopf was among those who opted to stay and help rebuild the tattered Army into a potent, modernized all-volunteer force.

After Saddam invaded Kuwait in August 1990, Schwarzkopf played a key diplomatic role by helping persuade Saudi Arabia's King Fahd to allow U.S. and other foreign troops to deploy on Saudi territory as a staging area for the war to come.

On Jan. 17, 1991, a five-month buildup called Desert Shield became Operation Desert Storm as allied aircraft attacked Iraqi bases and Baghdad government facilities. The six-week aerial campaign climaxed with a massive ground offensive on Feb. 24-28, routing the Iraqis from Kuwait in 100 hours before U.S. officials called a halt.

Schwarzkopf said afterward he agreed with Bush's decision to stop the war rather than drive to Baghdad to capture Saddam, as his mission had been only to oust the Iraqis from Kuwait.

But in a desert tent meeting with vanquished Iraqi generals, he allowed a key concession on Iraq's use of helicopters, which later backfired by enabling Saddam to crack down more easily on rebellious Shiites and Kurds.

While he later avoided the public second-guessing by academics and think tank experts over the ambiguous outcome of the first Gulf War and its impact on the second Gulf War, he told The Washington Post in 2003, "You can't help but ... with 20/20 hindsight, go back and say, 'Look, had we done something different, we probably wouldn't be facing what we are facing today.'"

After retiring from the Army in 1992, Schwarzkopf wrote a best-selling autobiography, "It Doesn't Take A Hero." Of his Gulf War role, he said: "I like to say I'm not a hero. I was lucky enough to lead a very successful war." He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and honored with decorations from France, Britain, Belgium, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain.

Schwarzkopf was a national spokesman for prostate cancer awareness and for Recovery of the Grizzly Bear, served on the Nature Conservancy board of governors and was active in various charities for chronically ill children.

"I may have made my reputation as a general in the Army and I'm very proud of that," he once told The Associated Press. "But I've always felt that I was more than one-dimensional. I'd like to think I'm a caring human being. ... It's nice to feel that you have a purpose."

Schwarzkopf and his wife, Brenda, had three children: Cynthia, Jessica and Christian.

Toyota acceleration settlement gets preliminary OK

(AP) ? A U.S. judge gave preliminary approval Friday to a $1 billion-plus settlement with Toyota Motor Corp. in cases involving problems of sudden, unintended acceleration by its vehicles, a plaintiffs' attorney said.

Attorney Steve Berman said in a statement he was pleased District Judge James V. Selna gave swift initial approval.

Toyota has said the deal, announced Wednesday, will resolve hundreds of lawsuits from motorists who said the value of their Toyota vehicles plummeted after recalls stemming from claims that the Japanese automaker's cars and trucks accelerated unintentionally.

The preliminary approval means current and former Toyota owners included in the settlement will receive information through notices expected to be mailed in early March. Information about the settlement will also be published in newspapers around the country.

Selna plans to hold a fairness hearing June 13 to consider granting final approval.

Numerous cases filed since 2009 were consolidated in Selna's court and divided into two categories: economic loss and wrongful death. Claims by people who seek compensation for injury and death due to sudden acceleration are not part of the settlement; the first trial involving those suits is scheduled for February.

Toyota has recalled more than 14 million vehicles worldwide due to acceleration problems in several models and brake defects with the Prius hybrid.

Toyota, which has blamed driver error, faulty floor mats and stuck accelerator pedals for the problems, plans to take a one-time, $1.1 billion pre-tax charge against earnings to cover the estimated costs of the settlement. Berman has said the total value of the deal is between $1.2 billion and $1.4 billion.

Toyota plans to offer cash payments from a pool of about $250 million to eligible customers who sold vehicles or turned in leased vehicles between September 2009 and December 2010. The company also will provide supplemental warranty coverage for certain vehicle components and retrofit about 3.2 million vehicles with a brake override system designed to ensure a car will stop when the brakes are applied, even if the accelerator pedal is depressed.

The settlement would also establish additional driver education programs and fund new research into advanced safety technologies.

Experts call off search for life in Antarctic lake

LONDON (AP) ? British scientists have called off the hunt for exotic life in an ice-bound Antarctic lake after their mission was hit by a technical hitch.

Researchers with the British Antarctic Survey had hoped to drill into Lake Ellsworth, which they believe has been frozen over for hundreds of thousands of years, in the hope of finding microbial life forms that might provide new insight into the evolution of life on Earth. They also hoped the lake floor's sediments might yield a new record of the Earth's climate.

But the project had to be called off following difficulties with drilling. A statement posted to the survey's website on Thursday said the operation had been canceled, and it was not clear if or when the scientists would try again.

Assad sends envoy to Moscow for talks on ending Syria's conflict

The Syrian senior diplomat is expected to discuss the UN mediator's proposals for ending the conflict. Russia, meanwhile, has signaled growing acceptance of President Assad exiting power.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin speaks during his annual news conference in Moscow, December 20. Any solution to the conflict in Syria must ensure President Bashar al-Assad's forces and his opponents do not simply swap roles and fight on forever, Putin said on Thursday.

Brahimi, who saw?Assad?on Monday and is planning to hold a series of meetings with Syrian officials and dissidents in?Damascus?this week, is trying to broker a peaceful transfer of power, but has disclosed little about how this might be done.

More than 44,000 Syrians have been killed in a revolt against four decades of?Assad?family rule, a conflict that began with peaceful protests in March last year, but has since descended into civil war.

A video posted by rebels on Wednesday showed the bodies of dozens of soldiers executed by a roadside. At least one of them appeared to have been beaten to death. The?United Nations?and rights group say the military and rebels have both committed war crimes, but have so far placed most of the blame on the?army.

Past peace efforts have floundered, with world powers divided over what has become an increasingly sectarian struggle between mostly Sunni Muslim rebels and?Assad's security forces, drawn primarily from his Shiite-rooted Alawite minority.

Deputy Foreign Minister?Faisal Makdad?flew to?Moscow?to discuss the details of the talks with Brahimi, said a Syrian security source, who would not say if a deal was in the works.

However, a Lebanese official close to?Damascus?said Makdad had been sent to seek Russian advice on a possible agreement.

He said Syrian officials were upbeat after talks with Brahimi, the U.N.-Arab League?envoy, who met Foreign Minister?Walid Moualem?on Tuesday a day after his session with?Assad, but who has not outlined his ideas in public.

"There is a new mood now and something good is happening," the official said, asking not to be named. He gave no details.

Russia, which has given?Assad?diplomatic and military aid to help him weather the 21-month-old uprising, has said it is not protecting him, but has fiercely criticized any foreign backing for rebels and, with?China, has blocked U.N. Security Council action on?Syria.

A?Russian Foreign Ministry?source said Makdad and an aide would meet Foreign Minister?Sergei Lavrov?and Mikhail Bogdanov, the Kremlin's special envoy for?Middle East?affairs, on Thursday, but did not disclose the nature of the talks.

Psychology of Medicine: Living With Cancer: Dancing With N.E.D. ...

The vocalist begins her song with people shocked by a diagnosis they cannot accept, women not yet ready to admit they have cancer.

Starts with denial, there must be some mistake;
Check the name, check the lab, double-check the date.

While electric guitars and percussion join in, the lyrics of the song,?"Third-Person Reality,"?go on to describe turbulent anger, tension and fear that can only be eased by acceptance.

Measure success one day at a time
Together we'll get to a better place
If you place your hand in mine.

The symbol of women with cervical, endometrial, ovarian, peritoneal, tubal, vaginal, and vulvar cancers-?a teal ribbon-often goes unrecognized, but these patients do have their own rock band. Through the driving rhythms of folk-rock, the band members of N.E.D. accompany a refrain made especially meaningful by the fact that they are all surgeons who treat patients with gynecological cancers. The group started as a cover band to entertain doctors at a 2008 meeting of the Society of Gynecological Oncologists. Since then they have taken on a mission "to break through the silence of women's gynecological cancer." In the process, they have produced two albums to raise awareness and money for research.

The band's name strikes a special chord with anyone who has had cancer. The acronym, N.E.D., stands for that rapturous moment when patients are told that there is "no evidence of disease."

The band's debut year, 2008, happens to be the year I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and I find myself learning from?N.E.D.'s Web site?about the umbrella term -- "gynecologic cancers" -- within which my disease resides. The American Cancer Society estimates that about 83,000 women are diagnosed each year with cancers "below the belt," and approximately 28,000 die from them. Yet with the notable exception of the brilliant comedienne Gilda Radner, who had ovarian cancer, no celebrity has emerged to represent the plight of these patients. That fact may illustrate how stigmatized these diseases remain. Do women with gynecological cancers still find it difficult to overcome modesty about difficult-to-discuss body parts, even in this current age when such body parts seem weirdly chatty? Notwithstanding Eve Ensler's historic?"Vagina Monologues"?and Naomi Wolf's narcissistic?"Vagina,"?I suspect that quite a few women do not want to publicize their relationship with their genitals -- especially when sexual and reproductive organs are imperiled by disease. Who can blame them and more power to them, I think.

After all, the title of the song "Third-Person Reality" suggests that people with cancer often feel so traumatized that they lose the ability to experience or express their sense of themselves. Alas, they may have morphed from first-person individuals into third-person patients, waiting interminably for this test or undergoing that procedure or paying for another script for yet another drug -- even if, as in my lucky case, a caring oncologist offers a helping hand.

There are and have been prominent women whose recognition could call attention to gynecological cancers. Think of the award-winning actress?Carol Channing?or Miss America of 1945,?Bess Myerson. Other exceptional people were swirled into the swing and sway of N.E.D. for only a round or two. The British biophysicist Rosalind Franklin lived long enough to illuminate the molecular structure of DNA, but her death made her ineligible for the Nobel Prize accorded Watson and Crick (who barely acknowledged her contribution). President Obama's mother, Ann Dunham, raised two remarkable children while completing a Ph.D. in anthropology and helping to establish micro-industries in Indonesia before she was misdiagnosed with one gynecological disease and died of another. That Dr. Franklin was 37 years old and Ms. Dunham 52 reminds us that such cancers do not single out aged women.A few weeks ago I received a heart-breaking e-mail from a mother whose daughter, Taylor Steele, died of ovarian cancer at 17. The Web site of the nonprofit foundation?Strong as Steele?informs me that Taylor Steele loved to dance, but she did not get much time with N.E.D. after she was diagnosed at 12.

And then there are people like me who are diagnosed later in life but can't fill out an N.E.D. dance card because, unfortunately, we still have E.D. (evidence of disease). That said, I am here to add that it is possible, if only intermittently, to hum along with E.D., which has its own sometimes somber but sometimes revitalizing rhythms.

The physician-musicians of N.E.D named their second CD?"Six Degrees"?for their six medical degrees, but also for the six degrees of separation between patients with gynecological diseases and everyone else. The title reminds me that every six minutes an American girl or woman discovers that she has a gynecological cancer. Let us hope that future research will develop new detection tools and improved treatments, giving each one a longer time to twist and shout with N.E.D.

Susan Gubar is a distinguished emerita professor of English at Indiana University and the author of "Memoir of a Debulked Woman," which explores her experience with ovarian cancer.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Families across the United States will have to rely on other sources of entertainment after Netflix's video streaming service was hit by a Christmas Eve outage.

The company based in Los Gatos, Calif., apologized in a company tweet for the outage Monday night.

The company says on its Twitter page that the outage was caused by "some of Amazon's cloud infrastructure." Netflix says it was working with Amazon engineers to restore the outage, which a company spokesman told the Wall Street Journal stretched "across the Americas."

Attempts to reach Netflix by The Associated Press were unsuccessful.

(AP) ? Bolivian President Evo Morales made a lightning trip this weekend to Havana where ally Hugo Chavez is convalescing after cancer surgery, but was mostly silent Monday on the details of his trip or even whether he met with the ailing Venezuelan leader.

The secrecy surrounding his visit was sure to add to the uncertainty surrounding Chavez's condition, despite reassurances Monday from Venezuelan officials that the president was slowly improving.

The Venezuelan leader has not been seen or heard from since his Dec. 11 surgery. Venezuelan officials have given few specifics about his condition and have offered no information about his long-term prognosis.

Luis Vicente Leon, a pollster who heads the Venezuelan firm Datanalisis, said the government's daily but vague updates on the president's health seem designed to calm anxious Chavez supporters rather than keep the country fully informed. For government opponents, however, he said the updates likely raise more questions than they answer.

"It's more for the Chavez movement than the country in general," Leon said. "There's nothing that one can verify, and the credibility is almost nil."

Morales did not speak to the foreign media while in Havana. Journalists had been summoned to cover his arrival and departure, but hours later that invitation was canceled. No explanation was given, though it could have been due to confusion over Morales' itinerary as he apparently arrived later than initially scheduled.

Cuban state media published photos of President Raul Castro receiving Morales at the airport and said he came "to express his support" for Chavez, his close ally, but did not give further details.

At an event in southern Bolivia on Monday, Morales made no mention of his trip to Cuba, even though aides had told reporters that he might say something about Chavez's recovery. Later, Morales' communications minister did not respond directly to a question about whether the two South American presidents had met face-to-face, saying only that he "was with the people he wanted to be with" and had no plans to return to Cuba.

"The report that President Morales has given us is that Chavez is in a process of recovery after the terrible operation he underwent," Amanda Davila told The Associated Press.

Morales is the second Latin American leader to visit since Chavez announced two weeks ago that he would have the operation. Rafael Correa of Ecuador came calling the day of the surgery. Uruguay's Jose Mujica has expressed interest in making the trek.

The visits underscore Chavez's importance to regional allies as a prominent voice of the Latin American left, as well as how seriously they are taking his latest bout with cancer.

Chavez underwent his fourth cancer-related operation of the last year-and-a-half on Dec. 11, two months after winning reelection to a six-year term. Venezuelan officials say Chavez is stable and his recovery is progressing, though he was treated for a respiratory infection apparently due to the surgery.

If Chavez is unable to continue in office, the Venezuelan constitution calls for new elections to be held. Chavez has asked his followers to back his vice president and hand-picked successor, Nicolas Maduro, in that event.

In Caracas, Venezuelan Information Minister Ernesto Villegas read a statement Monday saying that Chavez is showing "a slight improvement with a progressive trend," is keeping up with events back home and sends Christmas greetings to Venezuelans.

Maduro and several Cabinet ministers attended a Christmas Eve Mass in Caracas to pray for the president. Maduro again assured Venezuelans that the president was recovering, though he and other officials continued to strongly suggest that Chavez would not return in time for his Jan. 10 inauguration.

Opposition leaders have argued that the constitution does not allow the president's swearing-in to be postponed, and say new elections should be called if Chavez is unable to take the oath on time.

But Attorney General Cilia Flores insisted the constitution lets the Supreme Court administer the oath of office at any time if the National Assembly is unable to do it Jan. 10 as scheduled.

"Those who are counting on that date, hoping to thwart the Revolution and the will of the people, will end up frustrated once again," Flores said. "What we have is a president who has been re-elected, he will take over, will be sworn in on that day, another day, that is a formality."

Jaqueline Farias, the head of government for the Caracas area, told the AP outside the church that "we are very happy because each hour the 'commandante' is showing signs that he is overcoming this phase of the operation, his fourth operation."

When asked if the president was breathing on his own, she said she didn't know and walked off, refusing to answer more questions.

Dozens of Chavez supporters gathered outside the church, some carrying posters of the president or wearing red T-shirts decorated with a photograph of just Chavez's eyes. Some women rushed to the church after seeing footage of the Mass on state television and yelled at security guards to let them inside.

"Chavez is going to be mad, if he sees this," said Andres Sanchez, an unemployed Chavez supporter watching a woman shouting at a guard that she wanted to pray for Chavez, too. "He told the ministers to talk to the people."

"Venezuela without Chavez is like a ship without a rudder," Sanchez said, his voice wobbling. "I pray to God that he recovers because he is a man who loves the people, the children, the elderly and everyone a little bit."
