Scientists uncover potential drug target to block cell death in Parkinson's disease

Friday, January 11, 2013

Oxidative stress is a primary villain in a host of diseases that range from cancer and heart failure to Alzheimer's disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. Now, scientists from the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have found that blocking the interaction of a critical enzyme may counteract the destruction of neurons associated with these neurodegenerative diseases, suggesting a potential new target for drug development.

These findings appear in the January 11, 2013 edition of The Journal of Biological Chemistry.

During periods of cellular stress, such as exposure to UV radiation, the number of highly reactive oxygen-containing molecules can increase in cells, resulting in serious damage. However, relatively little is known about the role played in this process by a number of stress-related enzymes.

In the new study, the TSRI team led by Professor Philip LoGrasso focused on an enzyme known as c-jun-N-terminal kinase (JNK). Under stress, JNK migrates to the mitochondria, the part of the cell that generates chemical energy and is involved in cell growth and death. That migration, coupled with JNK activation, is associated with a number of serious health issues, including mitochondrial dysfunction, which has long been known to contribute to neuronal death in Parkinson's disease.

The new study showed for the first time that the interaction of JNK with a protein known as Sab is responsible for the initial JNK localization to the mitochondria in neurons. The scientists also found blocking JNK mitochondrial signaling by inhibiting JNK interaction with Sab can protect against neuronal damage in both cell culture and in the brain.

In addition, by treating JNK with a peptide inhibitor derived from a mitochondrial membrane protein, the team was able to induce a two-fold level of protection of neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta, the brain region devastated by Parkinson's disease.

The study noted that this inhibition leaves all other cell signaling intact, which could mean potentially fewer side effects in any future therapies.

"This may be a novel way to prevent neuron degeneration," said LoGrasso. "Now we can try to make compounds that block that translocation and see if they're therapeutically viable."

Angry Birds-Maker Rovio Crossed 263M Monthly Active Users Last Month

rovio-angry-birdsRovio, the Finnish makers of Angry Birds, said they crossed 263 million monthly active users in December, with 30 million downloads in Christmas week alone and 8 million downloads on Christmas Day. The figure is about 30 percent higher than the 200 million monthly active users the company had at the end of 2011. For perspective, 263 million monthly actives is nearly as many as Zynga has. Zynga reported 311 million monthly active users in the third quarter of last year, and tracking site AppData says that the company currently has 264 million monthly active users on Facebook. Rovio, which found its landmark hit on the iOS platform on its 52nd attempt at launching a game, has set increasingly lofty (and some say, crazy) goals year after year. At an interview I did with the company in November, the company’s chief marketing officer Peter Vesterbacka said he wanted Rovio to be the first entertainment brand with 1 billion a users a day (or as many as Coca-Cola interacts with). The path to that involves not just smartphone games, but loads of licensed merchandise, animated shorts, a feature length film, and potentially hundreds of activity and amusement parks in China and throughout the world. China recently became Rovio’s biggest market by daily active users. The company expects that around half or more of its revenue will eventually come from real-world goods (not virtual ones).

Microsoft Researchers Developing Wrist-Worn Sensors That Track Finger Movements

Microsoft developers in the UK working with researchers from Newcastle University have recently announced?an intriguing project: a wrist strap sensor that tracks finger motions in real time. Appropriately called Digits, the wireless system allows wearers to control computers remotely by recognition of individual finger movement and orientation using an infrared camera and an inertial measurement unit. That means not only the orientation of the wrist but the angles of each finger can be used?for gesture control.

Because its a wireless wrist worn device rather than a glove, users could interact with electronic devices without being physically connected to them and have their hands free for non-computer related activities.?The Digits prototype was demoed at the Computing Machinery Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology (ACM UIST 2012).

A video about the project shows how gesture control with the device works:

The press release for the device reveals that researchers are looking at gesture control as a way to interact with electronic devices without the need to physically touch them. One of the PhD students working on the project asked, ?Can you imagine how much easier it would be if you could answer your mobile phone while it?s still in your pocket or buried at the bottom of your bag??

Clearly, the tech would need to be miniaturized down to the size of a wristwatch to be useable. It could also be useful as a complement to?voice recognition software like Siri and Evi and voice-driven Google Search in ways that could make interacting with computers much more akin to interacting with humans, that is, through verbal and nonverbal communication.

The latest work is part of a growing trend: hardware developers are hellbent on revolutionizing input devices.

When Microsoft introduced Kinect a few years ago, it opened up the possibilities of wireless body tracking for application use. Last spring, one of the biggest steps toward wireless gesture control was introduced by Leap Motion, which is a highly precise and inexpensive 3D finger tracker?that the developers proposed would replace the keyboard and mouse.

On a related front, researchers are pushing hard on the development of smart gloves for user interfaces, such as the one made famous by the film Minority Report.?These gloves could replace a mouse altogether and could be configured for very specific applications as well. For instance, an innovation team called Med Sensation?that emerged from this year?s Graduate Studies Program at Singularity University?is developing?a Tricorder-like glove for medical examinations.

The Digits project joins these approaches and others that are part of a larger movement towards wearable computing, and odds are devices will start to hit the market next year. How quickly they will be adopted and which ones will ultimately prove to be the most useful is still up for grabs.

In light of all the competition in this space, the Digits prototype has a long way to go, and even if optimized, might not find broad utility. Still, it shows where gesture recognition technology is headed, suggesting that in the years ahead we may control electronic devices with a simple flick of a finger rather than a click of a button.

Significant increase in flu cases as severe flu season gains momentum

Jan. 10, 2013 ? Montefiore Medical Center infectious disease experts are urging the public to get vaccinated against influenza in one of the most severe and longest flu seasons in a decade.

Montefiore has seen an influx of flu cases over recent weeks with as many as 40 percent of people who are seeking care in the emergency departments testing positive for influenza. This mirrors dramatic increases in cases across the state and in many parts of the nation. More than 15,000 cases have already been reported in New York State, nearly triple compared to last year, while hospitalizations are up 169 percent.

"Our clinics and emergency departments are overwhelmingly busy with both adult and pediatric flu cases," said Dr. Brian Currie, vice president and medical director for research at Montefiore. "Only those with severe symptoms or people living with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, heart disease or other illnesses that weaken the immune system should visit the emergency department if they have the flu."

To manage the surge of patients, Montefiore is extending hours at several of its community urgent care sites. For the majority of people, flu symptoms (e.g., high fever, sore throat, cough, fatigue, headaches and muscle aches) are relatively mild, and those patients should stay home and call their primary care physician.

"Those at greatest risk of complications from flu are children under the age of two, pregnant women and adults over the age of 65," Dr. Currie said. "People are urged to stay home and not go to school or work to if they are sick, in order to prevent further transmission of the flu."

It is not too late to get vaccinated. Antibodies that protect against the flu develop in about two weeks after vaccination, and the flu season is expected to continue through the spring. Those interested in getting a flu shot can visit clinics run by the Department of Health, area hospitals, including Montefiore, and commercial pharmacies like Walgreens, CVS and Duane Reade.

Because the influenza virus is constantly mutating, scientists develop the annual vaccine against the strain they believe will be most common, though it is not guaranteed to be an exact match. This year's vaccine can provide good protection against H3N2, the influenza strain that has emerged this season. Experts believe that about 90 percent of the viruses found in testing are well-matched to the current vaccine.

In addition to getting vaccinated, Montefiore experts urge everyone to take common sense steps to prevent the spread of germs, including:

? Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand rub. ? Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze -- even consider coughing into your elbow to reduce the spread of germs from your hand. ? Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way. ? When sick, stay home and limit contact with other people.

"Everyone can play an important role in preventing the devastating impact of the flu," Dr. Currie said.

Testimony: Colo. shooting suspect planned massacre

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) ? As officials this week laid out the most detailed portrait yet of last year's Aurora movie theater massacre, they also mapped sometimes paradoxical behavior by the man accused of the rampage, James Holmes.

At a hearing to determine whether the former neuroscience graduate student should stand trial for the shooting, detectives Tuesday testified that Holmes spent more than two months assembling an arsenal for the assault on a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Returns."

He bought his tickets nearly two weeks before the July 20 massacre. He rigged an elaborate booby-trap system in his apartment to distract police from the carnage at the theater, though the trap was never sprung, they testified.

But after police arrested him leaving the scene clad in body armor, Holmes showed less focus. He played with the paper bags they placed on his hand to preserve gunpowder evidence, pretending they were puppets, Aurora Det. Craig Appel testified. Holmes played with a cup and tried to jam a staple into an electrical outlet.

Holmes' lawyers were expected to present an insanity defense. They have previously stated that Holmes, 25, is mentally ill. Defense lawyer Tamara Brady pointedly asked an ATF agent in court Tuesday whether any Colorado law prevented "a severely mentally ill person" from buying the 6,295 rounds of ammunition, body armor and handcuffs that Holmes purchased online.

There is not, the agent replied.

Holmes' mental state is expected to be the focus of future legal arguments and possibly the latter part of the hearing, when defense attorneys have said they might present witnesses to describe his mental health. Prosecutors on Tuesday called their final witness, who was expected to continue his testimony Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the case was dominated by the litany of Holmes' preparations. Law enforcement officers said Holmes' first recorded purchase was of two tear gas grenades, ordered online May 10.

Holmes also bought two Glock handguns, a shotgun and an AR-15 rifle, along with 6,295 rounds of ammunition, targets, body armor and chemicals, prosecutors said. The magnitude of the attack was captured in the first 911 call, played Tuesday in court, that police said recorded at least 30 shots in 27 seconds.

He dyed his hair bright orange, then bought a scope and non-firing dummy bullets on July 1, the visit and the new hair color documented in security video.

Finally, he purchased glycerin and potassium permanganate ? chemicals that could combine to create fire and sparks ? from a Denver science store. At some point, he also improvised napalm, as well as thermite, a substance which burns so hot that water can't extinguish the blaze.

Holmes' purchases were split between two planned attacks, prosecutors said ? the theater shooting and a booby trapped apartment that would've blown up if anyone had entered.

The bottle of glycerin was meant to fall into the permanganate when the door to his apartment opened, to cause an explosion and then a fire, prosecutors said.

Parts of Holmes' carpet were soaked with gasoline and oil and ammonium chloride, a white powder, was poured onto the floor in strips, FBI bomb technician Garrett Gumbinner said.

"It would have ignited and the whole apartment would have exploded or caught fire," Gumbinner said.

He said the system had two other initiating systems. One was a pyrotechnics firing box that would have been triggered by the remote control unit of a toy car left along with a boom box set to play loud music. Gumbinner said Holmes told him he hoped the music would lure someone and lead them to play with the car, thereby detonating the explosives.

The other initiating system was a model rocket launch box which operated by means of infrared light, but Holmes told investigators it wasn't armed, Gumbinner said.

The attempt at a distraction speaks to a plan to escape but the traps weren't triggered. Holmes, clad from head to toe in body armor, was found standing by his car outside the theater. He told investigators that the booby-trapped apartment was an effort to pull police away from the theater so that, under the scenario, he wouldn't expect to see police so quickly.

Police said he volunteered information about the booby traps. Authorities went to the apartment and carefully dismantled them.

Prosecutors also used Holmes' dating website profiles to try to prove he knew the consequences of his actions. On two social networking websites ? Match.com and FriendFinder.com ? Holmes asked: "Will you visit me in prison?"

The Match profile was created in April; the FriendFinder account was opened on July 5. Holmes last accessed the sites two days before the July 20 shooting, detective Tom Welton testified.

Defense attorney Daniel King asked Appel if Holmes was tested for drugs or other substances.

"I saw no indication that he was under the influence of anything," Appel said.

Holmes' lawyers could have waived the first public airing of the case against him, but legal analysts say they may see the mini-trial as a chance to gauge the prosecution's case or tactics to prepare for a possible plea agreement.

Cases rarely advance to this stage without a judge agreeing to set a trial.

If Holmes is found sane and goes to trial and is convicted, his attorneys can try to stave off a possible death penalty by arguing he is mentally ill. Prosecutors have yet to decide whether to seek the death penalty.

If he's found not guilty by reason of insanity, he would likely be sent to the state mental hospital, not prison. Such a defendant is deemed not guilty because he didn't know right from wrong and is therefore "absolved" of the crime, said former Jefferson County District Attorney Scott Storey, who recently lost an insanity case.

Last year, Bruco Strong Eagle Eastwood was acquitted by reason of insanity in the wounding of two eighth-graders outside a school not far from Columbine High School. His case garnered national headlines after a math teacher tackled him and stopped the shooting.

Why America's Kids Need New Standards for Science Education

Image courtesy of Penn State and pennstatelive, via Flickr

Earlier today, a group of scientists, educators and policymakers released the newest draft of the Next Generation Science Standards, which lay out ambitious expectations for what elementary, middle and high school students should learn at each grade level. These guidelines affect virtually every child enrolled in public school, and advocates say they will revolutionize STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education in this country. Though the standards are voluntary, many policy watchers expect a majority of states to sign on, as they did with the Common Core State Standards in Math and Language Arts in 2010. I asked Michael Wysession, an author of the new standards and a seismologist at Washington University in St. Louis, to explain why the science standards released today are so important.

Guest post by Michael Wysession, Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis and a member of the Leadership Team for the writing of the Next Generation Science Standards. He has also served as the Earth and Space Science Design Team Leader for the National Research Council?s ?A Framework for K-12 Science Education,? which informed the new standards.

It was 7:45 a.m. on December 21, 2012, and I was in the studio for St. Louis TV Channel 2 News. ?Why are so many people convinced that the world is going to end today?? the anchorwoman asked, referring to the supposed ancient Mayan doomsday prophesy. I thought of talking about how precarious human civilization was ? as Will Durant said, ?Civilization exists by geologic consent, subject to change without notice.? I thought about the five major extinctions of life over the past half-billion years, the most recent being the end of the Cretaceous, when a rogue object from space DID hit the Earth, on the Yucatan peninsula, which, incidentally, was the home of the same Mayans whose calendar was ending today.

Then I thought about the eruption of Toba volcano 74,000 years ago, which may have nearly wiped out the human species.? And I thought about the long string of volcanic eruptions, rapid climate swings, tsunamis, droughts, floods, and other geoscience catastrophes that have routinely devastated the human population and prevented any one civilization from lasting very long. Then I thought about the nearly unbelievable changes that we humans were making to our planet, most certainly replacing the 10,000-year-old Holocene Epoch with the new Anthropocene Epoch. And I wondered how we would know at what point these human impacts would be severe enough to justify replacing the 65-million-year-old Cenozoic Era with a new era, the Anthropozoic Era, the sixth major extinction of life, brought about by the current dominant agent of geologic change on our planet (which is us).

But the smiling commentator who was interviewing me did not want to hear about geologic catastrophes, and I wondered how many viewers would have had the background to understand my answers. Americans get almost no high school education in the areas of Earth and space science. At that moment, the best thing I could talk about was how badly America needed the Next Generation Science Standards, , which are due to be released this spring and whose second public draft was released today. Americans have been duped by too many scams concerning our planet for too long. We need better science education.

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are a comprehensive set of K-12 student ?performance expectations? for the areas of Earth and space science, life science, and physical science. They integrate concepts of engineering and technology and develop ties to the math and English ?Common Core? standards. The NGSS are based on the recommendations of a report by the National Research Council (NRC, the educational arm of the National Academies of Science) called ?A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas.? The basis for the NGSS is that all of the performance expectations involve a weaving together of three dimensions ? the practices of science, the crosscutting concepts of science, and the core ideas of science. This structure was established and defined in the NRC Framework, and the NGSS are the resulting fleshed-out standards.

Simply put, the NGSS will revolutionize science education for most of the country, at least for the states that choose to adopt them. Though they contain the latest and most up-to-date findings of science, their strength lies in incorporating the latest and most up-to-date advances in pedagogy and educational research. The NGSS move away from presenting science as a list of facts to be memorized and present science as a set of practices to be done. In fact, every grade-appropriate performance expectation, each sentence, ties together a particular science content with a science practice; you cannot pull the content out into a list of factoids.

The aim of NGSS is to identify what students can do, not what they know. After all, if you want to know how many planets there are, you can always look that up on the web. If you want to understand why they are important and how they function as part of a system, the solar system, then there are a set of practices you should do, which the NGSS identify as (1) Asking Questions and Defining Problems, (2) Developing and Using Models, (3) Planning and Carrying Out Investigations, (4) Analyzing and Interpreting Data, (5) Using Mathematics and Computational Thinking, (6) Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions, (7) Engaging in Argument from Evidence, and (8) Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information.

It is well known that most Americans get nearly all their science education after they leave high school. This is less an indictment of the public school educational system than it is an indication of the great fascination that most Americans have with science and the many excellent ?informal? educational opportunities available to them. Museums, national and state parks, educational television programs, and digital/print media (such as Scientific American) provide many great opportunities for people to explore the natural world. However, there is still a need for a solid K-12 science education. Schools and textbooks used to be where people got most of their science information. Now that we are flooded with information, we need our formal education more than ever, not to convey more information, but to make sense of it all.

Think of your K-12 science education as constructing a giant bookshelf on which you will organize and make sense of the steady stream of scientific information you will come in contact with during your lifetime. Without that structure, you end up with endless piles of facts, stacked high, that either clutter up your world or eventually get thrown out. (For example, if you Google the word ?volcano? you get back almost 100 million websites. How do you make sense of all this?) A good formal science education allows you to organize those facts into sensible concepts that you can build upon if they interest you. And the key is that understanding science enough to construct that conceptual organizational ?bookcase? requires you to actively do science, and the labs and data and hands-on opportunities provided in school are the best way to do this. This is what the Next Generation Science Standards are encouraging.

The NGSS provide exciting new opportunities for all the sciences, but most greatly in the areas of Earth and space science. The NGSS standards would require roughly a year of high school Earth and space science. What was the last grade you were in where you received any geoscience education? If you are like most Americans it was in middle school. You might think that there is a sound reason why geology is usually taught in middle school, with little math involved, and not in high school. There isn?t. Though we live in a thoroughly modern scientific world, our science education structure is now 120 years old.

Yes, back in 1893 a group of university professors called the ?Committee of Ten,? led by Harvard University president George Eliot, made a set of recommendations to try to standardize the education of incoming university students. Some of the recommendations were excellent, such as promoting hands-on laboratory experimentation and outdoor investigations, but one unfortunate recommendation was that the three years of high school science be of biology, chemistry, and physics, and that ?physical geography? be taught in middle school. (Not even any mention of geology.) To be fair, geology wasn?t much at that time; it was mostly a science of categorizing minerals, rocks, fossils, and the relative time sequence of the geologic record. Geologists had no idea why mountains formed or volcanoes erupted. The first seismic recording of an earthquake was made just 4 years earlier. Radioactivity was still a decade away. Milankovitch didn?t figure out that Ice Ages were caused by changes in Earth?s orbit until World War I. The discovery of the mid-ocean ridges wasn?t until after World War II. The pieces of the theory of plate tectonics weren?t assembled until the late 1960?s.

However, some time between 1893 and now, the fields of Earth and space science became a set of quantitative, complex, process-based, systems-oriented, and remarkably relevant scientific practices. Unfortunately, our educational system is still in the mode of teaching ?physical geography? in middle school, so this change went largely unnoticed by most Americans, for whom middle school geology meant scratching some minerals and memorizing the geologic time scale. The result of this has been devastating. We became a country with no coherent energy policy because so few people understand the complex issues surrounding both renewable and non-renewable energy sources. We have no national policies toward the limited resources of minerals, soil, and groundwater, as most people don?t even realize these resources are limited. Humans have become the greatest agent of geologic change on the planet, altering the land surface an order of magnitude faster than any other geologic process, but most people have no idea of the impacts of their collective actions. Imagine a toddler who instantly grew to the size of a city and started ravaging the countryside. That?s us.? We have suddenly found ourselves with immense powers, but are still a long way away from having the maturity to know what to do with it or how to control it. Stopgap legislation like the Clean Air Acts and Clean Water Acts, though vitally important, don?t begin to address the enormous impacts our activities are having on Earth?s systems.

The writing of the Next Generation Science Standards is being supervised by Achieve, Inc., which is a bipartisan not-for-profit organization created by a group of governors and corporate leaders in order to carry out K-12 education reform at the state level. However, it is not accurate to say that Achieve is writing the standards. A diverse writing team of almost 50 scientists and educators has been working closely with representatives from 26 participating states as well as many other ?critical stakeholder? organizations. The draft of NGSS being released today is only the second public draft, but with all of the reviews by the participating states and critical stakeholders I have lost track of what iteration this is. 6? 7? 8? The point is that it has been very carefully written to be accurate and relevant and useful to states.

It is also important to note that NGSS is entirely apolitical. For the most part, everyone agrees that science, technology, and education are all good things. Everyone wants a better-trained workforce in the areas of engineering and technology. If you look at a map of the 26 states involved with writing the standards, there is lots of both red and blue. For some states, maintaining states? rights in the area of K-12 education is very important, so it is critical to note that not a penny of federal funding went into constructing either the NRC Framework or the NGSS. Both projects were funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Privately funded and written by states, the NGSS may be national standards, but they are not federal standards.

Let me give you one example of how the NGSS play out in Earth and space science. At the high school level, there are five Earth and space science topics, each one with about a half-dozen performance expectations: Space Systems, History of Earth, Earth?s Systems, Weather and Climate, and Human Sustainability. These build upon similar topics at the middle school level. You can read them all at the Achieve web site (http://www.nextgenscience.org/next-generation-science-standards). At the middle school level, the topic of Weather and Climate is focused on weather. At the high school level it is focused on climate change, which can be seen as a capstone high school science experience for all students.

Climate change is not only a critically important topic, it is also one of the most complex topics in all of science, involving cycles within cycles that are a function of radiation physics, atmospheric chemistry, ocean circulation, Milankovitch cycles of solar system orbits, variations in solar output, volcanic eruptions, biosphere dynamics, human activities, and the many complex feedbacks among them. Students need to carry out mathematical analyses of actual data and perform laboratory experiments on Earth materials in order to begin to understand this topic. Students will develop complex systems-based models, construct explanations for cause-and-effect processes, and use engineering concepts to design potential solutions. Not only is this topic unteachable at a middle school level, it needs to be taught following high school physics, chemistry, and biology. However, the result will hopefully be a public that not only ceases to deny the existence of climate change but embraces the topic because of both its relevance and its fascinating intricacies. I think that we can do it. Other countries already have. We also don?t really have a choice. We are still a world leader in science, but no longer a leader in public science education. These two statements are not compatible in the long run.

So, we made it through December 21, 2012, and the world didn?t come to an end. If people had had decent education in Earth and space science, this would not have even been a story. There is no need for us to worry about Mayan prophecies or a rogue planet called Nibiru that might be on a track to hit us. Now, occasionally some large asteroids do hit us; ask the dinosaurs. But it doesn?t happen often, and if people knew that NASA tracks the locations of tens of thousands of objects in space and has the technology to know of any major collision decades in advance, they wouldn?t worry about it.

There is something we should worry about, however: our own ignorance. The Earth science-related challenges facing humanity are enormous. The voting citizenry needs to understand the complexity of these issues so they won?t be duped by over-simplified slogans. Consumers need to understand the implications of their purchases. And everyone needs to know that Earth systems are more delicate than they might think and that the geologic record shows that conditions at Earth?s surface can change in a hurry and often have. Hurricanes like Katrina and Sandy will be replaced by larger ones. As a NOAA scientist recently remarked, when pointing to the fact that the sea level adjacent to New York City is now 13 inches higher than it was a century ago, if you raise a basketball court by 13 inches you will get a lot more slam dunks. As President Abe Lincoln said, ?The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate for the stormy present?.As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew.? The adoption by most states of the Next Generation Science Standards is an important step in that direction.

Qatar aiding Egypt with extra $2.5 billion

CAIRO (AP) ? Qatar says it will increase its financial aid to Egypt by $2.5 billion, bringing its total assistance to $5 billion.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheik Hamad Bin Jassem Al Thani says his nation will loan Cairo an additional $2 billion and transfer another $500 million grant. He was speaking in Cairo Tuesday after a meeting with his Egyptian counterpart.

Qatar has already deposited $2.5 billion, helping to prop up Egypt's foreign currency reserves. They stand now at $15 billion, and the country's central bank warns that is a "critical minimum" level.

In parallel, Cairo is in renewed discussions for a $4.8 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund, aimed at helping cover a widening budget deficit and boost investor confidence in Egypt's ailing economy.

Get Some Solid Pointers In Commercial Real Estate ... - Maynas Eric

A lot of people have achieved success in the commercial real estate market. Contrary to popular belief, there isn?t a magic formula for success. It takes a combination of factors, including experience, work, and a broad knowledge of how the industry operates. This article has some tips to help you begin your adventure in real estate.

There is much more time and work involved in purchasing a commercial property rather than a residential property. You should understand that although this is a huge undertaking, when all is said and done you will receive a big return on the investment.

Locate the right financing first. Don?t make the mistake of thinking that commercial lending is the same as residential lending. Some aspects of commercial loans are better than those of home loans. While commercial loans generally require a more significant down payment, lenders are usually more flexible about where or from whom you get that down payment.

TIP! In order to learn more about the commercial real estate market, find a website that caters to investors of different skill levels. You can never learn too much, so you should study real estate topics regularly.

You should advertise your commercial property as being for sale to people locally and those who are not local. Many sellers mistakenly assume that their property is only interesting to local buyers. Many investors will consider purchasing a property outside their own region if the price is right.

Pay for professional inspections of your commercial property before you put it on the market. This way you can make sure it is prepared in advance of a sale, and if any problems arise during the inspection you can take care of it on the front end.

Be sure to realize all properties have a lifetime. Ignoring a property or deciding to wait too long can cause this lifetime to come to an unexpected end, especially if you aren?t willing to pay the fees for proper upkeep over the period of time. Consider the fact that a property could need a brand new, expensive roof fitted, or a modern electrical system installed. All buildings have these kinds of requirements, depending on the specific building, some may require more repairs than others. It is important to plan ahead so that you will be able to make the needed repairs.

TIP! One counterintuitive fact about the apartment market is that many experts recommend avoiding properties with fewer than ten units, as they are actually more of a pain to deal with than large complexes. The specific details of the property you are looking at will determine if it is a good investment, so do not use the ten unit rule as a strict guideline.

When you decide to invest in commercial property, set your sights a little higher than before. Don?t let fear of managing a large building stop you from making the best investment possible. In reality, there?s no difference between managing a small number of units and a large number. Both sizes require substantial financial investments, but the larger unit will ultimately have a lower cost per unit.

Take tours of the properties that are potential purchases. Consider going with a contractor when you are looking at places you want to buy. Begin negotiating and the process of offers and counter offers. Make sure you evaluate any counteroffers well enough before you make any purchasing decisions.

Search Engine

TIP! To prepare for any sizable investment in commercial real estate, investigate indicators of fiscal health around the property in question, such as average income levels for nearby residents, rates of employment and unemployment, and whether jobs in the area are rising or falling. Having a house located near a hospital, business sector, university or other school will greatly increase your home?s value, and provide you with a better chance for quickly selling it.

Create an online presence for your company before you start investing. Set up a website and profiles with various search engines and social networks. Search engine optimization principles will increase your online visibility. Ideally, business associates and clients should be able to find your website just by entering your name into a search engine.

When you are picking between commercial properties, think big! Financing may be no more difficult for the large apartment building than the small one. Generally, this is much like the principle of buying in bulk; the more units you buy, the lower the price per unit.

Itis customary for the borrower to arrange for the appraisal on a commercial loan. The bank won?t let you go back and order it later. Order your appraisal yourself to ensure that you will be eligible for commercial loans.

TIP! Scrutinize any disclosures made by a real estate agent whom you intend to hire. Make sure you understand the potential for the existence of dual agency.

One of the biggest considerations in the process of attaining commercial property is to know the neighborhood of each and every prospective location. For example, if you?re offering high-priced goods or services, you might want to purchase property in wealthier areas where people are likely to be able to afford to buy from you. If the products and services you offer are more middle class or less affluent, then purchase in an area where there are more buyers suited to your business.

It is important to know how to deal with emergency maintenance. Speak with the landlord about handling of emergency repairs just so you know who to call in that situation. Keep their numbers updated, and know how long it takes them to arrive on average. Use the information provided by your landlord to help you prepare a plan for when normal business is disrupted by certain events.

Commercial Real Estate

TIP! If you are renting or leasing, be sure to know about pest control arrangements. This is especially important if the region is known for certain types of pest infestations.

Once you know what you are doing, it will be easier to succeed in the commercial real estate market. Keep the advice from this article in mind and apply it to your own commercial real estate dealings. Continue educating yourself about commercial real estate, and find any way you can to up your game. The more experience you gain, the more likely you will become successful.

selinagonez: You, your own boat and boat insurance: | Boating ...

You, your own boat and boat insurance:

Owning a boat is a great matter of pride as well as status symbol nowadays. Although people are buying boats for a numerous reasons like for business, renting their boat to others, fishing, travelling etc. Now, it is not necessary that everyone will be able to buy a huge mighty cruise liner or a big yacht for themselves. Everyone has their own limitations and reasons to buy their own watercraft. So, it can be anything from an expensive powerful yacht, a superfast speed boat to a rowing boat or simple small wooden boat for fishing. Now, in many previous articles we have talked about speed boats, yachts, pleasure boats etc. but in this one we will focus only on small wooden fishing boat and its need to have boat insurance.

Imagine a simple scenario that you have completed building and decorating your watercraft after a tiresome wooden work of many days to months. Your watercraft is ready for going out there on water and helps you in fishing. Every little thing seems to be fine and you proudly stand beside your small fishing boat with the reflection of pride and joy on your face. Everything starting from a single nut bolt to the motor of the watercraft has been fixed under your surveillance and you are pretty sure that your watercraft is the best fishing boat of its genre that has been ever made. But, have you ever considered the need of boat insurance for your boat? You might feel that since your boat is of moderate budget and not a very expensive one so it would be unwise to spend on boat insurance policies. But, remember though your boat may be of moderate price the damage which it may cause once on water while fishing may not be of moderate range.

Imagine on your first day of fishing you accidentally hit a luxurious yacht and caused a little damage to it for which you will have to cough out thousands of dollars. If you have third party liability insurance in your pocket then you need not have to a single penny extra other than your regular moderate premiums. All the cost of recovering the damage cause to a third party would have been borne by your insurance company. Suppose, you have got your watercraft wrecked by any unprecedented unlucky event in the middle of the water and your boat has sank into the bottom. You are already under a state of shock for losing your fishing boat for which you have spent a large amount of your money. But, according to the laws of most countries you will have to get you wrecked boat out of the bottom of water so that the ecological balance of the water body is not disturbed. Imagine the frustration and anxiety that you will have to bear if you need to spend a good amount of money for getting boat towed off to the shore even after knowing that it?s all over and your boat is now only few pieces of woods. A moderate boat insurance can save you from this nightmare and bear the cost of not only recovering your boat to the previous good old state but also to tow it up to the shore. Apart from these any damage cause to the hull, motor, or any part of the boat can be replaced by your insurance company if you have a valid insurance policy. Needless to say that having boat insurance will also guard you against damage caused by vandalism, fire, or theft.

Draw Up Your New Year's Fitness Resolution And Stick To It - Amino Z

January 7th, 2013 posted by poch

Do you ever wonder why fitness centres are teeming with people in January but tend to have lower attendance as the months go by?

By all means, this may be an indication of individuals failing to sustain or live up to their New Year?s fitness resolution.

People who belong to this category routinely swear to exercise more, eat healthy food, take workout supplements, sleep more or a combination of these to start the new year. They begin the new year with an intense resolve to work on their fitness goals but eventually get sidetracked.

It?s no wonder most gyms nationwide make a killing during the first quarter of the year but see their sales targets drop drastically during the latter part. ?If not that, obesity figures may tend to skyrocket well after January if people continue to let their health and fitness go by the wayside.

Now, this is not to say you should sign up for a permanent gym membership. Whether it be at the gym or a home fitness centre, you can still become the fit and fab individual you were meant to become.

The trickier part is trying to sustain the momentum of a New Year?s fitness resolution.

A good suggestion here would be motivation by fear. This is simply when you are deathly afraid of something to the point it actually motivates you to do something about it on a consistent basis.

Take the example of cardiovascular disease. If you are afraid of getting afflicted with it, yet your belly fat is starting to accumulate at an alarming rate, what is the use of sitting in the office and at home all day and not doing anything about it?

Post a caricature of an overweight character in your cubicle, for instance. By routinely looking at this picture, your fitness instinct will automatically kick in especially if you are wary of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. It is guaranteed to get you moving and focus on the other fitness intangibles which includes healthy eating and getting sufficient rest.

If motivation by fear won?t do the trick for you, you can always stick to the traditional form. If you look up to someone with a killer body such as Arnold Schwarzenegger or LL Cool J, do something that will take your inspiration to a higher level.?Post a photo of that person so that it will be his or her image you?ll see when you wake up first thing in the morning?a sure-fire way to kickstart your day.

You can also use that photo as a wallpaper or screensaver for your office computer. This will help you get in the right frame of mind even before you begin pumping some serious iron.

Altnernatively, another great way to help you stick to your New Year?s fitness resolution is to chart or keep track of your progress. If you are a woman, have you been wanting to fit into a size 6 or 7 dress? ?Hang that dress in your room and visualise yourself fitting into it.

If you are a man, get yourself a size 31 or 32-inch pair of slacks and visualise a snug fit down the track.

Take appropriate action and stop at nothing until you reach this goal. Write down how many kilograms you lose each week. Jot down the next steps to be taken in order to maintain your fitness level once that goal is reached.

Write down new goals in order to be consistent. Once a certain fitness goal is reached, some people tend to become slack and get carried away.

These are just several ways on how to ratchet up the intensity for your fitness goals this 2013. You may have your own way of motivating yourself to achieve the goals you have drawn up. The key is to never be content with only a few weeks? or months? worth of success.

Make fitness a lifestyle, and your life will change radically for the better.

NHL, union make progress in marathon talks

NEW YORK (AP) ? Marathon talks between the NHL and the players' association stretched deep into Saturday night and then Sunday morning after the sides stayed apart for most of the previous two days.

Once federal mediator Scot Beckenbaugh convinced the fighting factions to resume face-to-face negotiations Saturday afternoon, they were able to make progress. While no one commented publicly on what was accomplished, it was reported that headway was being made on key issues such as the pension plan and salary cap limits.

The sides began meeting around 1 p.m. EST and were still talking at 3:30 a.m. It was the longest session of this lockout and the second marathon meeting of the week. It also was the latest a session had gone into the night.

The league and the union talked until 1 a.m. Thursday before negotiations hit a snag.

Bargaining proceeded at a slow pace on Saturday, and the sides also separated to hold internal caucuses. Beckenbaugh conducted meetings alone with the union and league before bringing them together.

Beckenbaugh walked back and forth several times Friday between the Manhattan headquarters of each side ? beginning at 10 a.m. and wrapping things up shortly before 11 p.m.

While he never got the league and the union in the same room then, enough was accomplished to convince the sides to keep going.

Beckenbaugh began Saturday by holding a meeting with the union and then walked over to talk to the NHL office. He then made the trek back to the players' association's hotel for the group meeting.

The sides have less than a week to reach a new collective bargaining agreement to save what likely would be a 48-game hockey season.

Beckenbaugh also took part in talks during the 2004-05 lockout, which forced the cancellation of the whole season.

The players' association concluded a two-day vote among its members on Saturday night that was expected to again give the union's executive board the authority to declare a disclaimer of interest.

The disclaimer can now be issued at any time. If so, the union would dissolve and become a trade association. That could send this fight to the courts and put the season in jeopardy. The disclaimer would allow players to file individual antitrust suits against the NHL.

Earlier this week, a self-imposed deadline expired on the first authorization that union members gave the board. The initial threat seemed to work in getting the NHL back to the bargaining table, but talks broke down Wednesday night after the deadline passed without action taken by the union.

Now the players want to regain the leverage the potential disclaimer gives them.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman set a Jan. 11 deadline for a deal so the season can begin eight days later. A 48-game season is the minimum Bettman said the league would play.

All games through Jan. 14, along with the All-Star game, have been canceled, claiming more than 50 percent of the original schedule.

Trust has become a major impediment in the talks that appear to have been rescued to some extent by Beckenbaugh.

On Thursday morning, the sides solved a problem that arose regarding the reporting by clubs of hockey-related revenue, and how both sides sign off on the figures at the end of the fiscal year. The union felt the language had been changed without proper notification. That dispute was over in about an hour, but clearly discord was present in the talks.

Another small meeting, the second of the day without union head Donald Fehr, addressed the pension plan. That one lasted just under two hours and marked the last time the sides met this week.

The players' association held a late Thursday afternoon conference call to initiate its second vote on the disclaimer of interest.

A sense of progress might be why the union didn't declare the disclaimer Wednesday, but any optimism created after the deadline passed has taken several hits since.

The NHLPA filed a motion in federal court in New York seeking to dismiss the league's suit to have the lockout declared legal. The NHL sued the union in mid-December, figuring the players were about to submit their own complaint against the league.

But the union argued that the NHL is using the suit "to force the players to remain in a union. Not only is it virtually unheard of for an employer to insist on the unionization of its employees, it is also directly contradicted by the rights guaranteed to employees under ... the National Labor Relations Act."

The court scheduled a status conference for the sides on Monday.

The sides have traded four proposals in the past week ? two by each side ? but none has gained enough traction. Getting an agreement on a pension plan likely would go a long way toward a deal that would put hockey back on the ice.

Fehr believed a plan for a players-funded pension was established before talks blew up in early December. That apparently wasn't the case, or the NHL changed its offer regarding the pension in exchange for agreeing to other things the union wanted.

The salary-cap number for the second year of the deal ? the 2013-14 season ? hasn't been agreed to, and is another major point of contention. The league is pushing for a $60 million cap, while the union wants it to be $65 million with a floor of $44 million.

In return for the higher cap, players would be willing to forgo a cap on escrow.

Other issues still needing resolution include the maximum length of player contracts, the yearly variance in salary of those individual deals, and how long the CBA should be in effect.

Both sides seem content on it lasting for 10 years, but they had different opinions on whether an opt-out should be allowed to be exercised after seven years or eight.

Last season, the NHL posted record revenues of $3.3 billion. The sides seem likely to agree on a 50-50 split of the pot in any new deal.

The NHL is the only North American professional sports league to cancel a season because of a labor dispute, losing the 2004-05 campaign to a lockout. A 48-game season was played in 1995 after a lockout stretched into January.

Ordinary glass's extraordinary properties revealed

Jan. 6, 2013 ? Technologically valuable ultrastable glasses can be produced in days or hours with properties corresponding to those that have been aged for thousands of years, computational and laboratory studies have confirmed.

Aging makes for higher quality glassy materials because they have slowly evolved toward a more stable molecular condition. This evolution can take thousands or millions of years, but manufacturers must work faster. Armed with a better understanding of how glasses age and evolve, researchers at the universities of Chicago and Wisconsin-Madison raise the possibility of designing a new class of materials at the molecular level via a vapor-deposition process.

"In attempts to work with aged glasses, for example, people have examined amber," said Juan de Pablo, UChicago's Liew Family Professor in Molecular Theory and Simulations. "Amber is a glass that has been aged millions of years, but you cannot engineer that material. You get what you get." de Pablo and Wisconsin co-authors Sadanand Singh and Mark Ediger report their findings in the latest issue of Nature Materials.

Ultrastable glasses could find potential applications in the production of stronger metals and in faster-acting pharmaceuticals. The latter may sound surprising, but drugs with the amorphous molecular structure of ultrastable glass could avoid crystallization during storage and be delivered more rapidly in the bloodstream than pharmaceuticals with a semi-crystalline structure. Amorphous metals, likewise, are better for high-impact applications than crystalline metals because of their greater strength.

The Nature Materials paper describes computer simulations that Singh, a doctoral student in chemical engineering at UW-Madison, carried out with de Pablo to follow-up some intriguing results from Ediger's laboratory.

Growing stable glasses

Ediger, like researchers for decades before him, had been growing materials via vapor deposition in a vacuum chamber. In this process, glasses are created when a sample a sample material is heated, then vaporizes and finally condenses and grows atop an experimental surface.

Several years ago, he discovered that glasses grown this way on a specially prepared surface that is kept within a certain temperature range exhibit far more stability than ordinary glasses. Previous researchers must have grown this material under the same temperature conditions, but failed to recognize the significance of what they had done, Ediger said.

Ediger speculated that growing glasses under these conditions, which he compares to the Tetris video game, gives molecules extra room to arrange themselves into a more stable configuration. But he needed Singh and de Pablo's computer simulations to confirm his suspicions that he had actually produced a highly evolved, ordinary glass rather than an entirely new material.

"There's interest in making these materials on the computer because you have direct access to the structure, and you can therefore determine the relationship between the arrangement of the molecules and the physical properties that you measure," said de Pablo, a former UW-Madison faculty member who joined UChicago's new Institute for Molecular Engineering earlier this year.

There are challenges, though, to simulating the evolution of glasses on a computer. Scientists can cool a glassy material at the rate of one degree per second in the laboratory, but the slowest computational studies can only simulate cooling at a rate of 100 million degrees per second. "We cannot cool it any slower because the calculations would take forever," de Pablo said.

"It had been believed until now that there is no correlation between the mechanical properties of a glass and the molecular structure; that somehow the properties of a glass are "hidden" somewhere and that there are no obvious structural signatures," de Pablo said.

Creating better materials

"What we found here is that there are actually differences, it's just that you had to create better glassy materials. Once you create these materials, you see that the structure, the differences between ordinary and stable glasses are clearly there and are actually pronounced."

Ultrastable glasses achieve their stability in a manner analogous to the most efficiently packed, multishaped objects in Tetris, each consisting of four squares in various configurations that rain from the top of the screen.

"This is a little bit like the molecules in my deposition apparatus raining down onto this surface, and the goal is to perfectly pack a film, not to have any voids left," Ediger said.

The object of Tetris is to manipulate the objects so that they pack into a perfectly tight pattern at the bottom of the screen. "The difference is, when you play the game, you have to actively manipulate the pieces in order to build a well-packed solid," Ediger said. "In the vapor deposition, nature does it for us."

But in Tetris and experiments alike, when the objects or molecules descend too quickly, the result is a poorly packed, void-riddled pattern.

"In the experiment, if you either rain the molecules too fast or choose a low temperature at which there's no mobility at the surface, then this trick doesn't work," Ediger said. Then it would be like taking a bucket of odd-shaped pieces and just dumping them on the floor. There are all sorts of voids and gaps because the molecules didn't have any opportunity to find a good way of packing."

AMHERST, N.H. (AP) ? A photo marked "not to be published" that shows a teenage Diana Spencer before she became Princess of Wales, with a young friend seated beside her, will be featured in an auction this month in New Hampshire.

The photograph might never have been seen publicly until now, RR Auction said.

Stamped February 1981 on the back, the photo was taken around the time Charles, the Prince of Wales, and Lady Diana Spencer ended months of speculation and announced they were to be married.

The photo came from the Caren Archive, a major private collection of rare newspapers and other publications, and was purchased seven years ago from the Daily Mirror newspaper.

Bobby Livingston, vice president of RR Auction, said Saturday that neither the auction house nor Caren Archive, knew the identity of the young man in the photo. However, he said he understood that a British newspaper had been able to identify him.

British media have identified the young man as Adam Russell, the great-grandson of former Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin.

In 1981, Diana first told news of her engagement to her friends, then moved out of her apartment Feb. 23 and into Buckingham Palace. What was widely labeled the wedding of the century took place on July 29, 1981, at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1996, and Diana died in a Paris car crash in 1997.

Another Diana photo to be included in the auction is an original 1988 news photo of the princess observing a marriage conflict resolution seminar.

The auction is scheduled for Jan. 17-24 in Amherst.

Since 1981, we've been offering a fun and well-structured program in Japanese yoga and martial arts for children age five and above. These affordable classes are taught by experienced instructors and are non-competitive. Class sizes are small, and instruction is personalized. The Sennin Foundation Center presents training in Saigo Ryu aiki-jujutsu, a traditional martial art. Our class features a wide variety of powerful throwing, pinning, and grappling techniques stemming from older methods (kobudo) originating in the Aizu-Wakamatsu area of Japan. Children improve their health while learning martial arts as meditation, which helps them to remain calm under pressure. Instruction in the Shin-shin-toitsu-do system of Japanese yoga and meditation is included at no extra charge. Japanese yoga training makes it easier to master the martial arts, and it helps children to realize their full potential in other activities as well. Studying Japanese yoga and aiki-jujutsu gives young people a great opportunity to learn self-discipline, self-confidence, and self-defense.
